Overview

Giant mammals of the sea

In Mauritius, we’re immensely lucky to have two amazing species of whales grace our waters: sperm whales, who hang out year-round way out in the deep, and humpback whales, who swing by from May to October to nurture their little ones. Depending on the season—and a bit of luck!— we’ll observe either of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Respect is key when observing whales. We keep our distance, but sometimes these curious humpback or sperm whales come close to check us out! Staying nearby for just the right amount of time, we ensure we don’t disturb their natural flow.

This spectacular experience will leave you in awe, with memories that last a lifetime. The ocean is calling!

Encounter wild whales

FIRST
STOP

Imagine the wonder of seeing majestic sperm and humpback whales move through the open ocean, their immense size and grace taking your breath away. As these incredible giants breach, splash, and glide, you’ll experience a profound connection to the wild.

Mauritius is home for resident sperm whale pods. They are easily recognized by their enormous square head and narrow lower jaw. Females and their young stick together in family groups, while mature males roam solo and only migrate to Mauritius in breeding season. Male sperm whales can reach up to 20 meters in length and weigh up to 50 tons—making them the largest toothed cetaceans and the biggest predators on the planet!

These marine mammals, also called cachalot, are often spotted in the deep sea, where they can dive up to 2,000 meters and stay submerged for up to two hours, hunting their most preferred dish, the giant squid.

Humpback whales make a grand entrance in Mauritius each year between May and October to mate and welcome their young. These magnificent baleen whales are famous for breaching and showing their tails when they dive. This makes them very popular with whale watchers as it’s a very dramatic sight!

Up to 15 meters long and weighing around 40 tons, you’ll usually spot them close to shore, where females shelter with their calves, while males tend to hang out further offshore.

Humpbacks embark on epic journeys of up to 25,000 km annually, traveling from polar feeding grounds to Mauritius for breeding.

Humpback Whales In Mauritius

Good to know

Our whale-watching trips run about 3-4 hours, depending on where the whales decide to hang out. Patience is key here—sometimes we need a little extra time to find them. But don’t worry, we’ve got a hydrophone to help track them down. And when we do, it’s pure magic!

Swimming with whales is prohibited in Mauritius (Mauritius Tourism Authority Regulations 2012) and our speedboats follow strict safety protocols to make sure we maintain a respectful distance at all times. Our goal is to watch them while keeping their serenity intact!

Coral reef escapade
